Earth Science Matters

The Canada Prize underscores a simple but profound message: Earth Science matters.

Our ability to survive and thrive on Earth depends on understanding its systems and the ways they sustain life.

Through this award, we aim to elevate public awareness of the essential role that geoscience plays in addressing global challenges. This includes everything from climate change and natural resource management to planetary stewardship and sustainability.

The Prize recognizes that knowledge of the Earth is not only scientific, but also deeply human — a foundation for the health, safety, and prosperity of all societies.

IGC 2028

The Canada Prize for Earth Science will be officially launched at the International Geological Congress (IGC 2028) in Calgary, Alberta. This marks just the third time Canada has hosted this world event.

This launch will symbolize Canada’s longstanding contribution to Earth Science and reaffirm the country’s leadership on the global stage.

The IGC 2028 announcement will also mark the transition from vision to reality — celebrating the scientists, organizations, and citizens who helped establish the Canada Prize as a lasting international recognition of excellence.
